The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Benue State Council, has commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for approving a minimum wage of ₦75,000 for workers in the state.
The union has also praised the Governor for paying the remaining three months of salary arrears.
The commendation came Thursday during a courtesy visit to the Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula, at the Government House, Makurdi.
Led by the Chairman, Comrade Bemdoo Ugber, the new NUJ Executive Committee expressed gratitude for the Governor’s commitment to transparency, particularly during the recent union election.
The union pledged its support for the Alia-led administration, promising to promote people-oriented policies and programs.
However, they appealed to the Governor to address pressing issues, including: Implementation of Wage and Hazard Allowances, ensuring that all members working in state government-owned media houses benefit from the circular issued by the national body of the union.
Other demands include : provision of a new bus for the union to facilitate transportation and operations, restoration of the union’s office which has become dilapidated, payment of stipends for union members to support union members and veterans engaged in private practice as well as encouraging and sustaining their publications and businesses.
In response, Sir Tersoo Kula congratulated the new NUJ Executive Committee, urging unity and progress.
He promised to forward the union’s demands to the Governor and encouraged the team to revive the union’s vibrancy, especially in information dissemination.
In her remarks, Principal Special Assistant (PSA) to the Governor, Bridget Ikyado Tikyaa, commended the union for revitalizing the council and supporting the current administration.
She urged the council to address quackery in the profession, ensuring only qualified journalists practice, and to diligently hold the Government accountable.
