Professor Stephen Ikani Ocheni, a former Minister, has called on lecturers in tertiary institutions to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) detectors to identify students who use AI tools to generate answers.
He advocated for severe penalties, including zero scores, for culprits to serve as a deterrent.
Speaking at the third International Conference of the Faculty of Social Science, Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, Professor Ocheni warned that over-reliance on AI could lead to decreased critical thinking and problem-solving skills in students.
He emphasized the need for educators to use AI with care and to develop skills to effectively utilize AI tools in education.
The University Don highlighted the opportunities and challenges of AI in education, particularly in Africa, where socio-economic factors pose significant challenges.
He stressed the need for professional development programs to equip educators with the necessary skills to harness AI’s potential.
Professor Ocheni’s keynote address emphasized the importance of balancing AI use with traditional educational strategies to foster a well-rounded learning experience.
He was conferred with an award by the Faculty of Social Science and was accompanied by dignitaries, including the Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic, Professor Usman Salisu Ogbo, the immediate Transition Chairman of Igalamela/Odolu Local Government, Barrister Cosmas Atabor, the Special Adviser to the Kogi State Governor on Drugs Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Hon Eunice Achimugu as well as a former Chairman of Kogi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Comrade Ali Atabor.
