The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Kogi State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC), Engr. Ibrahim S. Abdwaaris, has revealed that proactive measures are being implemented to attract investors to participate in the electricity market in Kogi State.
In a meeting with the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Alhaji Ismail Isa, Engr. Abdwaaris highlighted the establishment of a special court and taskforce as key initiatives to address major challenges in the industry.
“The commission is supporting Kogi Electricity Distribution Limited (KEDL) in creating avenue for prosecuting individuals caught vandalizing equipment or engaging in energy theft, which poses a significant threat to the industry,” he stated.
During the commission’s six months of operation, it has granted a free license to KEDL to enhance efficient, steady, and prompt power supply to consumers in kogi state.
Engr. Abdwaaris noted that prospective investors are approaching the commission to express interest in participating in the market, emphasizing that private sector involvement would improve power supply to both served and underserved areas in the state.
The Chairman/CEO also mentioned that existing mini-grid operators have pledged their commitment, stating that their generation capacity could supplement the national grid.
Furthermore, the commission’s Forum Office in Lokoja has successfully resolved disputes between KEDL and some consumers.
Engr. Abdwaaris assured that KERC will continue to regulate the electricity market in the interest of both service providers and power consumers in the state.
In his remarks, Special Adviser Mallam Ismail Isa expressed satisfaction with the commission’s progress, stating that Kogi State has made significant strides since assuming regulatory power in the electricity sector.
“The appointment of the Chairman/CEO and other key officials has given the state an edge over others involved in regulatory activities,” he said, urging them to leverage their expertise to drive the sector’s growth.
