The Lokoja Confluence Stadium was abuzz with excitement as the Kogi State Executive Council took on the state Legislators in a highly anticipated novelty football match.
The encounter, which was part of the activities lined up to mark Governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo’s one-year anniversary, lived up to its billing, with both teams displaying impressive soccer skills.
The Executive Council team, captained by Deputy Governor Comrade Joel Oyibo Salifu, who donned jersey number two, was determined to make a statement.
They faced off against the Legislators, led by Speaker Aliyu Umar, in a match that was expected to be a closely contested affair. The atmosphere was electric, with soccer enthusiasts and supporters of both teams cheering them on.
As the match kicked off, both teams displayed their soccer artistry, with ferocious attempts to find the back of the net.
Kingsley Fanwo, a member of the Executive Council team, was a standout performer, showcasing mesmerizing moves that left the crowd in awe.
However, his efforts, as well as those of his teammates, including Auditor General Syiaka Adabenege, were thwarted by the Legislators’ defense, marshaled by Usman Ocheidi, also known as Powerful.
Despite the best efforts of both teams, the match ended in a goalless draw, with neither side able to break the deadlock.
The supporters, however, were not disappointed, applauding the physical fitness and soccer skills displayed by both teams.
In a post-match interview, Kogi State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Mr. Monday Anyebe, commended both teams for their impressive display.
He noted that the novelty match was organized as part of activities to celebrate Governor Ododo’s one-year anniversary and to promote sports development in the state.
Mr. Anyebe expressed his satisfaction with the level of competition displayed by both teams, which he said was comparable to professional football league players.
