The Niger State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on the state government to take concrete steps to address hunger and insecurity in the state.
The resolution was made at the end of the NUJ Niger State Council Congress held on Wednesday, July 24, 2025.
According to the communiqué issued at the end of the congress, the council recognized the efforts of the state government in pursuing the “New Niger Development Agenda” but urged the government to evolve a new mechanism to address the issue of hunger among citizens.
The congress also urged the government to monitor contractors handling major roads, patronize local contractors, and provide farming inputs to farmers.
The government was commended for reducing food prices but urged to secure farmers from bandits in Munya, Shiroro, Rafi, Mariga, and Rijau local government areas.
In other resolutions, the congress called on the government to stop illegal mining in the state and to see the media as partners in progress.
The council also resolved to crack down on fake news and unethical practices among journalists and to partner with the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons.
A seven-member committee was inaugurated for the authentication and revalidation of NUJ membership, and the council approved holding a Media Summit/Press Week in September 2025.
