SENATE PRESIDENT AKPABIO URGES NUJ TO EMBRACE INNOVATION, REORIENTATION AT 70

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called on the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) to embrace innovation and undertake reorientation of its members to promote unity, ethical standards, and combat insecurity, especially in the era of social media.

Senator Akpabio made the remarks during a courtesy visit by the NUJ delegation led by its President, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya.

The Senate President emphasized the importance of accurate, balanced, and fair reporting, expressing concern over the rise of social media journalism that often spreads misinformation.

He urged the NUJ to work towards curbing indiscipline among journalists who spread false information.

The Senate President  highlighted the need for the media to be partners in progress, aligning with the positive initiatives of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He recalled the legacy of Nigerian journalism, founded by pioneers like Nnamdi Azikiwe and Anthony Enahoro, and called for a shift in mindset towards promoting national development.

The Senate President congratulated the NUJ on its 70th anniversary and assured the union of his presence at the anniversary celebration on June 21, 2025.

He emphasized the importance of promoting unity and combating insecurity together, and pledged the Senate’s full cooperation with the NUJ.

NUJ President Alhassan Yahaya had earlier emphasized the need for collaboration with the National Assembly to introduce the Media Enhancement Bill, designed to advance journalism and support journalists nationwide.
