Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday formally welcomed Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and their supporters into the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as a significant moment in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Representing President Bola Tinubu at the event in Asaba, Shettima told the defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that they are now “co-owners” of the APC, emphasising unity, collaboration and shared ownership within the ruling party.
Highlighting the significance of the event, the Vice President stressed that the APC’s strength lies in managing differences through dialogue, rather than dictation.
He noted that the party’s resilience since its formation in 2013 stems from its inclusive approach and commitment to democratic ideals.
Shettima called the defections a “declaration” of Nigeria’s enduring spirit and a step towards building a stronger, more united nation.
APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, hailed the development as historic, praising President Tinubu’s leadership for attracting credible figures like Oborevwori into the party.
Ganduje formally presented the APC flag and broom to Oborevwori, while Progressive Governors’ Forum Chairman and Imo Governor, Hope Uzodimma, lauded the Delta Governor’s track record, noting that Delta State’s development aligns with APC ideals.
Speaking on behalf of the new members, Governor Oborevwori said the move was a “movement,” not a mere defection, stressing that Delta stakeholders collectively decided to align with the APC and support President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Former Governor Okowa affirmed the decision was for the good of Delta State, stressing the need to connect to the national government for greater benefits.
Several APC governors and national leaders attended the event to show support.
