President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has dispatched a high-level federal delegation to Niger State to sympathise with victims of the catastrophic floods that struck Mokwa and its surrounding communities.
The tragedy has claimed at least 151 lives, displaced over 3,000 people and destroyed hundreds of homes and key infrastructure.
Led by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris and the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, the delegation met with Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba.
Idris conveyed the President’s condolences and reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to providing urgent support and relief.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has begun delivering aid and conducting recovery operations in collaboration with the state government.
The President also directed the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to intensify awareness campaigns in flood-prone areas to strengthen disaster preparedness and early response.
Prof. Yilwatda announced that the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons will take over long-term care of those displaced.
Deputy Governor Garba expressed gratitude to the Tinubu administration for its swift intervention and described the floods’ impact as severe, affecting roads, bridges and over 500 households.
