The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has marked the 2025 International Day of the Girl-Child, urging stakeholders to work towards creating a society that empowers and supports the development of girls.
In a statement signed by National Chairperson of NAWOJ and the National Secretary, emphasized the need for collective action to address the challenges facing the Nigerian girl-child.
The theme for this year’s celebration, “Empower Girls: Expanding Opportunities, Elevating Voices,” underscores the importance of providing girls with the necessary tools and platforms to thrive.
NAWOJ commended the resilience and potential of Nigerian girls, while also highlighting the obstacles they face, including limited access to quality education, early and forced marriages, gender-based violence, and socio-economic exclusions.
The association called on government institutions, development partners, educators, traditional leaders, and the private sector to work together in building systems that promote justice, equality, and inclusivity for girls.
NAWOJ pledged to continue using its platforms to amplify the voices of girls, hold institutions accountable, and advocate for policies that protect and promote their rights.
By empowering girls, NAWOJ noted, Nigeria can unlock its full potential and drive development.
The association reiterated its commitment to advocating for the rights of girls, not just on this day, but every day.
